Six Winter Propane Safety Tips For Your Home

safety with propane north carolinaPropane is one of the safest and most efficient ways to power and heat your North Carolina home. But as is the case with any fuel, you have to know what to do to keep your family safe if the unexpected happens with propane – especially in winter.

Staying Safe With Propane During The Cold Months

Here are six propane safety tips for the cold weather months ahead.

  1. If you don’t know already, learn how to shut off the main supply of gas to your home from the propane tank, and teach all the adults living in your house how to do it. If you’re not sure how to do that, contact us.
  2. Learn how to identify a propane leak – which smells like rotten eggs – and what to do if you discover one.
  3. Following manufacturer’s instructions, install carbon monoxide (CO) detectors on every level of your home. We strongly urge you to install propane leak detectors, too, since propane can occasionally lose its odor (or you can lose your ability to smell due to a cold or flu).
  4. If severe winter weather is forecast:
    • Check your propane levels, making sure you have enough gas to last a week in the event road closures disrupt propane deliveries (don’t forget to consider fuel for your propane backup generator, if you have one).
    • Always follow the instructions of local authorities;
    • Clear snow and debris from vents, chimneys, and flues after a storm to reduce the risk of CO poisoning; use a broom rather than a shovel to avoid damaging your equipment.
  5. If you suspect that your propane appliances have been damaged or aren’t working properly, contact us right away for propane appliance service and repairs.
  6. Remember: if you shut down your gas supply for any reason, the law requires you to hire a licensed professional heating contractor to restart and pressure test your propane system.
